In Korean culture, the first birthday, known as "doljanchi" (돌잔치), is an important milestone and is often celebrated with family and friends.
Some common traditions associated with a Korean 1st Birthday include:
  1. Doljabi (돌잡이): One of the main events of a doljanchi is the doljabi, where a variety of objects are placed in front of the child and they are encouraged to pick one. Each object symbolizes a different future path for the child, such as a stethoscope for a doctor, a book for a scholar, or a microphone for a singer. The object the child picks is believed to predict their future.

  2. Hanbok (한복): The child usually wears a hanbok, a traditional Korean outfit, for the celebration. Traditionally, the fabric colors were red and green, but nowadays people have also worn more modernized pastel colors.

  3. Rice cake (찹쌀떡): A rice cake, called "tteok" in Korean, is an important part of the celebration. A large rice cake is usually prepared and placed on a table. Guests usually are given individually packaged rice cakes as a parting gift.

  4. Blessings and well-wishes: Family and friends offer blessings and well-wishes for the child's future.

  5. Feasting: A variety of traditional Korean foods are usually served, such as rice cakes, noodle dishes, meats, and savory pancakes.

In sum, the first birthday in Korean culture is a significant event that marks the child's transition from infancy to childhood, and is celebrated with love, blessings, and good wishes for the child's future.
